The Queen’s coronavirus speech transcript:

We will succeed and better days will come

       I am speaking to you at what I know is an increasingly challenging time. A time of disruption in the life of our country: a disruption that has brought grief to some, financial difficulties to many, and enormous changes to the daily lives of us all.

       I want to thank everyone on the NHS front line, as well as care workers and those carrying out essential roles, who selflessly continue their day-to-day duties outside the home in support of us all. I am sure the nation will join me in assuring you that what you do is appreciated and every hour of your hard work brings us closer to a return to more normal times.

       I also want to thank those of you who are staying at home, thereby helping to protect the vulnerable and sparing many families the pain already felt by those who have lost loved ones. Together we are rackling this disease, and I want to reassure you that if we remain united and resolute, then we will overcome it.

       I hope in the years to come everyone will be able to take pride in how they responded to this challenge. And those who come after us will say the Britons of this generation were as strong as any. That the attributes of self-discipline, of quiet good-humoured resolve and of fellow-felling still characterize this country. The pride in who we are is not a part of our past, it defines our present and our future.

       The moments when the United Kingdom has come together to applaud its care and essential workers will be remembered as an expression of our national spirit; and its symbol will be the rainbows drawn by children.

       Across the Commonwealth and around the world, we have seen heart-warming stories of people coming together to help others, be it through delivering food parcels and medicines, checking on neighbours, or converting business to help the relief effort.

       And though self-isolating many at times be hard, many people of all faiths, and of none, are discovering that it presents an opportunity to show down, pause and reflect, in prayer or meditation.

       It reminds me of the very first broadcast I made, in 1940, helped by my sister. We, as children, spoke from here at Windsor to children who had been evacuated from their homes and sent away for their own safety. Today, once again, many will feel a painful sense of separation from their loved ones. But now, as then, we know, deep down, that it is the right thing to do.

       While we have faced challenges before, this one is different. This time we join with all nations across the globe in a common endeavor, using the great advances of science and our instinctive compassion to heal. We will succeed – and that success will belong to every one of us.

       We should take comfort that while we may have more still to endure, better days will return: we will be with our friends again; we will be with our families again; we will meet again.

       But for now, I send may thanks and warmest good wishes to you all.

       我还要感谢坚持居家的人，你们帮助保护了易感染人群，使许多家庭免遭那些丧失至亲的家庭已经感受到的痛苦。我们正在合力对抗这场疾病，我要向你们保证，如果我们保持团结和鉴定，那就一定会战胜它。

       我希望在未来的岁月里，每个人都能为自己应对这一挑战的表现感到自豪。我们的后辈会说，这代英国人和以往历代英国人一样坚毅。自律、达观、友善，这些特质仍然是我国国民的特点。对我国国民性的自豪并没有成为过去，它定义着我们的现在和将来。

       在英联邦各国和世界各地，我们见证了人们团结互助的温情故事，无论是送餐送药、邻里守望，还是为了支援赈济行动而让企业转型。

       尽管自我隔离有时或许是种煎熬，但宗教信仰各异以及不信仰宗教的许多人现在发现，自我隔离提供了一个契机来放慢节奏、暂停脚步、在祈祷或冥想中反思。

       这让我想起了1940年我在妹妹的帮助下第一次广播讲话的情景。当时还是孩子的我们从温莎堡这里向那些处于安全考虑从家中被送走的孩子们发表讲话。今天再次有许多人将感受到与至亲至爱分离的痛苦。但是现在，一如当年，我们深知这是正确的选择。

       虽然我们以前也面临过挑战，但是这次的挑战不一样。这一次，我们与全世界所有国家联合起来，借助科学的巨大进步和我们与生俱来的同情心共克时艰。我们必将成功，这成功将属于我们每个人。

       我们应该感到欣慰的是，尽管我们或许还要忍耐更多的艰辛，但好日子终会回来：我们将再度与友人共聚；叫我们将重新与亲人团圆；我们将再次相见。

       但眼下，我要感谢大家，衷心祝福大家。
